The College system
Every student at Lyng Hall School belongs to one of our Colleges, with siblings typically placed in the same college, creating a strong sense of belonging and community throughout their time with us.
There are four colleges in main school (Years 7-11): Centaur, Griffin, Pegasus & Dragon, whilst the 6th formers belong to Phoenix.
Our College system brings students together through a wide range of opportunities, including competitions, leadership roles, charity events, enrichment activities and whole-school celebrations. The system encourages teamwork, pride, resilience and healthy competition, while helping students to build relationships beyond their tutor group and year group.
Students can earn points for demonstrating our core values: Respect, Resilience & Excellence. Praise points are given for achievement, attendance, effort and contribution to wider school life, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to make a positive impact.
Through the College system, students develop confidence, leadership skills and a shared commitment to our school values, creating a vibrant and inclusive school community where everyone can belong and succeed.
The Tutor group system
In addition to the College system, at Lyng Hall School, our tutor groups are organised using a horizontal structure, meaning students are grouped with others from the same year group. This enables tutors to provide age-appropriate guidance, support and pastoral care that is tailored to the specific needs, experiences and milestones of that year group.
Our horizontal tutor system helps to build a strong sense of year group identity, strengthens peer relationships, and ensures students receive consistent messages and support as they progress through school. It also allows staff to respond quickly and effectively to the academic, social and wellbeing needs of each cohort, creating a positive and supportive environment where every student can thrive.
The Tutor meets their group each morning between 8:45am and 9:15am. Tutor time is a compulsory part of the school day, and all students are expected to arrive in school with sufficient time to reach their tutor room and be ready to actively participate in the morning programme from the start of the session. Breakfast is available to students on site from 8.15am.
During mentor time students complete a range of activities such as:
- Uniform & Equipment check – checking they are ready to learn
- Assembly
- Numeracy/literacy activity

Wellbeing activities
Our Tutors work with students to reflect on their learning, behaviour choices and rewards. They are the first port of call for parents and are there to provide pastoral support for our students.
