In Sixth Form, students get the option to choose to study the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport. It is equivalent in size to one A Level and is often taken alongside two other A Levels or Level 3 qualifications.

What do students study?

The course focuses on the sports industry and combines theory with practical application. Compulsory units include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology – how the body systems work during exercise and sport.
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being – designing fitness programmes and understanding health-related fitness.
  • Professional Development in the Sports Industry – exploring careers, employability skills, and progression routes.

How is it assessed?

Assessment is a mix of:

  • External examinations
  • Coursework/assignments
  • Practical tasks depending on the unit. 

What skills does it develop?

Students develop:

  • Knowledge of sport science and fitness

Progression opportunities

The qualification can lead to:

  • University degrees in subjects such as Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, and related areas.
  • Employment or apprenticeships in sport, fitness, leisure, coaching, and recreation sectors.
