Catering

At Lyng Hall school we offer pupils the opportunity to study a Level 1/2 vocation in Hospitality and Catering. Students can gain a level 2
qualification at a pass, merit or distinction level. This course is a GCSE equivalent so has the same standing as a1-9 graded GCSE course.

Content of the Course

The course is split into two Units:

  • Unit 1—The Hospitality and Catering Industry. (written exam worth 40%)
  • Unit 2– Hospitality and Catering in Action. (coursework and practical assessment worth 60%)

Unit 1 consists of:

  • learning about
  • The industry
  • How providers operate
  • Health and safety
  • Food related illness
  • Different types of provisions

Unit 2 requires application of knowledge within:

  • Nutrition
  • Nutritional needs of specific groups
  • Environmental considerations
  • Skill and method levels

Practical work will take place at least once a fortnight and you will be required to supply ingredients for these lessons.

A level 1/2 Vocation in Hospitality and Catering offers a solid introduction to further study at Catering College. It also offers an insight into food and how it can be cooked, prepared and served – a useful life skill for anyone to achieve!!
